What is a database?

Hello Kids! Have you ever wondered how your favorite games, apps, and websites keep track of all your information? Like, how does a game remember your high score even after you turn off the console? This is called a database.

Consider a database as an ultra-organized digital diary. Just like you would keep a diary where you write the names of all your favorite Pokémon, the database stores various information. And guess what? You too can create and manage your own database if equipped with the necessary tools!

Today, we will talk about databases and their uses in children’s work using an interesting tool named Docical. Ready? Here we go!

What is a Database?

Simple Explaination

A database is merely information classifications that are easy to find and use. Picture rows upon rows of lockers in a school corridor. Every locker has its number while inside each locker; there are different students’ belongings. The hallway represents the database while specific lockers symbolize tables that hold your data.

Kinds of Databases

Let us start with two simple ones:

  1. Relational Databases: These look like big tables containing rows and columns just like spreadsheets e.g., MySQL or Microsoft SQL Server.
  2. NoSQL Databases: They can store data in many formats such as JSON (it looks like items nested within other items!). Examples include MongoDB and CouchDB.

But do not worry about these terms confusing your mind! With Docical, it enables easily creating and understanding databases without needing to go into these techy terminologies.

Why Are Databases Important?

Databases are used by you every day without you being aware of them! Where do databases play an important role?

  • Games: To save your progress and high scores.
  • School: To store grades and schedules.
  • Apps: To remember your settings and preferences.
  • Social Media: To keep track of all your friends and posts.

Can’t you imagine how complicated it will be if all these services could not remember anything about you? So much chaos, right?
